Can I retire?

Can I Retire at 62 with $500,000?

About $2,400 a month

That is how much a 62-year-old with $500,000 could have spent every month, rising with inflation through age 95, in 90% of historical periods since 1928. It is after taxes, and health insurance is paid for separately on top.

Social Security at full retirement ageMonthly budget
$1,500/month$2,000/month
$2,000/month$2,400/month
$2,500/month$2,800/month

Why history, not an average?

If markets simply grew at a steady 7% for stocks and 4% for bonds with 3% inflation, the budget would be about $2,500 a month. Real markets are bumpy, and a crash in the first years of retirement does lasting damage. Testing against every period since 1928, including retiring in 1929, 1966 and 2000, shows what holds up.
